Red Sparrow is a 2018 spy-thriller film directed by Francis Lawrence who worked with Jennifer Lawrence (the star here) on a couple of the Hunger Games movies, but this is a very different beast. Jennifer Lawrence plays Dominika Egorova (in, it has to be said, a not entirely convincing Russian accent), and Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenarts and Charlotte Rampling star as the film's secondary characters. This one is a pretty big departure from what Lawrence has done in the past, although it has to be said that she's making some pretty bold career choices. I'm not the first one to say that, and for a good reason: it's true. After last year's Mother! it appeared as if she was trying purposefully trying to appear in more "mature" films, and believe me, it doesn't get much more mature than Red Sparrow. The film plays out like one of those schlocky exploitation from the seventies, in that there's sexual violence, sex, violence, torture, and all manner o
Everyone knows that horror fans think Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year, because it's the time when all of the new horror movies come out, but it's also the time when we can sit around at home watching our favourite classics. But what happens when you run out of options, or you want to see something a little different? Well, fear not (or do, 'tis the season after all), because The Big Picture is here to give you its alternative Halloween film recommendations. So, without further ado, let's get into it.
1. Braindead
Braindead (or Dead Alive if you live in North America) was directed by Peter Jackson before he made it big with Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This film couldn't be any more different to the those. It's a comedy-horror film about a zombie outbreak in New Zealand, and it's a whole heap of fun.
It may not be for the faint of heart, but Braindead is one of the funnest zombie movies ever made. Absolutely full of jokes, both verbal and visual, and a lot of gore-infused fight scenes. If you're the kind of person who prefers their to horror to be funny instead of frightful, this one is for you.
2. The Inkeepers
This one is a bit more of a traditional horror than Brain Dead, but it still has its fair share of jokes. It's a haunted house story for people who like a side dish of characterisation and mystery with their horror. The main characters in this one are incredibly funny and likeable, and the relationship between the two of them is what makes this film so fun.
3. Raw
This will probably the most recent entry on this list, but in my opinion it's also the best. The best thing about Raw is that it's such a fresh take on the cannibal film genre. Given that this is the directorial debut of Julia Ducournau, I'm expecting great things form her in the future.
If you like metaphorical horrror films that talk about modern culture and society, then this is the one for you. Raw is an incredibly stylish and original horror film, and also one that doesn't skimp on gore and nastiness. This is a must-see for fans of the cannibal genre.
4. Kill List
Kill List is a pretty strange one. Known for cleverly blending a mix of genres, it's an incredibly disturbing and enigmatic film. This one isn't as light-hearted as the others on this list, but it gets points for being such a gripping film. This one is pretty experimental, but if you like your horrors to be strange and hard to get a handle on, then this one is for you.
5. Teeth
I think this will probably be the most divisive film on this list, but that is the entire point of the film. I think a lot of people vaguely know what Teeth is about, but very few people have seen it. But although, at its heart, Teeth is a very politically-minded film, the sense of fun never gets mired in the smartness of the script.
Again, if you like your horrors to have a sociological slant, then this film will be perfect for you. Where Raw is pretty gross-out, this one is focused more on the traditional horror formula, but that doesn't make it a worse film.
So, there it is. I hope the people reading this find something worth watching. Let me know what your favourite Halloween movies are in the comments. Thanks for reading.
